Google/China

In mid December Google realized there was a highly sophisticated and targeted attack on Google infrastructure originating from China. As a result of this attack intellectual property was stolen from Google. As Google researched further into the attack they realized that this attack was on at least 20 other large companies including technology, internet, finance and media companies. One of the main reasons for this attack was to read the Gmail email accounts of Chinese human right activists. Fortunately, these attacks were not successful and they just found out basic information about the email accounts rather than the content of the emails. Google has already begun creating more security breaches and they are warning the public in order for their own safety. Usually, a high power company such as Google would not share this attack with the public because it clearly shows a weakness in their company. But they decided to share it in order to protect their users. This decision shows the honor of Google which makes me respect them even more than before.

Facebook

Facebook, the popular social networking site recently changed their privacy settings. When the privacy settings changed, everyone was notified and most people quickly scanned over and pressed agree because no one thought it was important. I did not quickly scan over it because i would not like other people, who i do not know to look over my profile. But, people who did not pay attention to the new settings should have been more aware. The people were lazy and did not pay attention to the settings. Now, people should be warned about the settings because there is potential danger. Any social networking site has the possibility of turning dangerous because creepy people can search your name and find you.

Privacy groups have recently filed complaints with the US regulator the Federal Trade Company over the recent privacy change with facebook. EPIC (The Electronic Privacy Information Center) stated they had been joined with nine other privacy organizations in order to investigate the settings changes which facebook recently released. Facebook has been criticized by Electronic Frontier Foundation, The American Civil Liberties, and EPIC. Facebook needs to change the way their settings is set up in order to protect their users. Facebook is the new phenomenon.
